No-exam life insurance

Who can get fast-track approval, how the process unfolds, and what happens if you do not qualify.

Several carriers now feature accelerated underwriting: within specific age and coverage bands, they approve applicants by reviewing the application, medication records, driving history and other available information, bypassing the traditional paramedical exam. Approval can come within hours. Every quote here notes whether each product requires an exam, might need one, or does not.

What it changes

No exam does not mean no underwriting. The carrier will verify your answers, and they can challenge a policy in its first two years if your application contained errors. If their own records flag something, they may request an exam or blood tests anyway; you can proceed or decline at that juncture.

Who tends to qualify

You usually qualify if you are under approximately 60, requesting a benefit amount within the carrier's underwriting limits, with no significant health conditions, and have not used tobacco in the past year or longer. Some carriers will use blood work from a recent physician visit instead of ordering an exam.

Should an exam be necessary, expect a 20- to 30-minute appointment with a paramedic at your home or workplace in the Tracy area, at no charge. For many applicants with good health markers, the exam results can actually lead to a better rate class, so it need not be unwelcome.
