Term vs. permanent life insurance

What each kind is for, what it costs, and why most families start with term.

Term life provides a set death benefit if death occurs during the selected period—typically 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years—for a fixed monthly cost. At the end of the term, coverage terminates or can be renewed at a significantly higher rate. This is the most affordable method to secure substantial protection during your household's most vulnerable years.

Permanent life (whole life, universal life and similar products) remains active throughout your life and accumulates a cash component within the contract. The premium for the same benefit is substantially higher, and the cash value accumulates gradually at first. It fits those with indefinite needs: a dependent requiring lifelong care, liquidity for the estate, or a business transition plan.

How to choose

Begin with the need itself, not the product type. When a need is temporary—a mortgage that will be paid, children who will grow up—term insurance aligns perfectly. When a need is permanent, permanent insurance or convertible term may be the answer. Many carriers allow converting a term policy to permanent coverage without redoing medical underwriting, within a specified window. The quote tool displays each carrier's conversion options.

What people in Tracy often do

A practical strategy is a 20- or 30-year term policy matching your household's genuine needs, with a checkup as life unfolds. This approach keeps the monthly cost reasonable so you can afford sufficient protection right now, which is the priority. If you later discover a permanent need, Susman Insurance Agency is ready to explore that path with you.
